Ceylon Cinnamon: Benefits, Uses and History

Ceylon Cinnamon: Benefits, Uses and History

There are two main types of cinnamon on the market: Cassia and Ceylon.

At ImmuneSchein, we only use Ceylon cinnamon in our elixirs. The benefits of Ceylon cinnamon align with our values of pure health, natural vitality, and using the best ingredients for life. Ceylon cinnamon gets its name from the region of Sri Lanka. Also known as medicinal cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon produces a lot of powerful benefits.

Cinnamon comes from the Cinnamomum tree—the inner bark is stripped and dried into rolls of cinnamon sticks or ground into a fine powder.

Cassia cinnamon, which comes from the Cinnamomum cassia tree in Indonesia, has a powerful aroma and taste, but it also contains high levels of coumarin—a blood-thinning agent. Consuming too much coumarin can put the health of the liver at risk. This is the type of cinnamon that we commonly find in our kitchen pantries. While it is delicious, it is not known for additional health benefits. Ceylon cinnamon has a milder, sweeter flavor, has health benefits to go along with its flavor, and goes great in coffee, smoothies, herbal lattes, hot chocolate, and more.
